Intercultural Management

Scope of the Course:


This course examines the challenges and opportunities that culture poses in international business in general, and in Real Estate in particular. Topics include cultural influences on conducting business, values and communications, managing multicultural teams, and the role of culture in international leadership, organisational culture, firm structure, international negotiation, conflict resolution. The course aims to develop intercultural management education for working globally.


The learning objectives for this course are to enable students to:

  • Understand the social mechanisms by which culture is produced and maintained; understand cross-cultural differences and similarities

  • Understand and be able to apply and use the different cultural indicators (i.e., Hofstede, GLOBE, etc)

  • Understand how the processes of 'globalisation' impact international business, and the political and cultural environments in which the firm operates

  • Be able to identify what is meant by ‘organisational culture’, and discuss the interaction of national and MNC cultures

  • Define the term ‘Communication’, examine some examples of verbal communication styles, and explain the importance of message interpretation;

  • Describe how an MNC develops and implements entry strategies and ownership structures;

  • Understand the tensions between pressures for global integration and national responsiveness and the four basic options for international strategies;

  • Examine theories of motivation, and assess their value to international human resource management;
